Vegas on Demand launches on TiVoCast

Posted Tuesday, June 26th, 2007 at 4:50pm by Stephen

Check out the newest TiVoCast, Vegas on Demand. From the Players Network folks, this one is described as:

When you crave Las Vegas action just watch Player’s Network and you’re there. Hot shows, gambling thrills, sexy nights and bikini days.

For right now this is only available on your DVR, under TiVo Central -> Find Programs -> TiVoCast. (We’ll add it to TiVo Central Online’s TiVoCast section in the next few days.)

The first episode we’re carrying contains footage from a Hard Rock Hotel pool party. I’d say from my times in Vegas that the Hard Rock definitely has the most interesting pool scene.

It’s sweeping the internets

[Animated GIF of the Dramatic Chipmunk -- found on Boing Boing

The so-called Dramatic Chipmunk is actually (gasp) a prairie dog. Find him in his original Japanese-TV glory here.

TiVo Inc. categorically denies rumors that Dramatic Chipmunk will star in an upcoming TiVoCast reality show.

CrankyGeeks, DL.TV and Players Network launch on TiVoCast

Posted Friday, June 22nd, 2007 at 10:45am by Stephen

I haven’t been a diligent blogger lately, but earlier this week we launched CrankyGeeks and DL.TV on TiVoCast. And earlier in the month, we launched Players Network.
Here are the descriptions:

CrankyGeeks: Hosted by tech columnist John C. Dvorak, CrankyGeeks assembles a group of panelists to discuss the most controversial topics in tech.

DL.TV: The geeks at DL.TV offer up a fun mix of tech help, hands-on how-to’s, and product reviews.

Player’s Network: Your inside track on gaming lifestyle and casino action! Learn how to play and win games from Poker to Slots! Are you ready for Vegas?

I hadn’t seen CrankyGeeks previously, but have really enjoyed the two episodes that are up. DL.TV takes a bunch of folks from the late and lamented TechTV network.

Player’s Network is in a very different category, but as a poker player I’ve really liked the format of their last couple of episodes — three poker experts giving live commentary on the play from some amateurs in a tournament.

Check ‘em out! You can subscribe to any of them from your DVR by going to TiVo Central -> Find Programs -> TiVoCast, or else head to http://www.tivo.com/tivocast/.

Grats to slacy and aklein!

I’m slow to blog it, but I’m very impressed by Isaac Klein Lacy, brought into the world on May 26 by proud parents Steve and Andrea. Save one, this is the cutest newborn baby I’ve ever seen.

I can tell they’re proud parents because Slacy, usually a ruthless editor of his photo galleries who can distill 400 shots down to the best 20 that he wants to share, has seemingly published just about ever picture he’s taken since May 26…

Blow out

Posted Thursday, June 14th, 2007 at 12:05am by Stephen

Long day today; it started with me rushing to work for an 8:30 presentation. Right before the TiVo exit, my right front tire on my Mustang blew out.

I had enough time to get over before it deflated, and even though I had been driving 65, it wasn’t difficult to control the car. Because the highway was busy with no shoulder and I was about to present and I was only a few hundred feet from the building, I ended up deciding to drive off the freeway, making it to the building.

All that was left of my tire were two shredded circles, around a scraped up rim.

After some fluflaw with AAA over my card, they ended up coming out to install the spare (no way I was messing with it while dressed for work), and I was able to drive off at lunch on the spare (slowly!) to a tire place. There, I ended up replacing all four tires to be safe although the three remaining ones were probably fine, with a good three months of life left. Found out later that the rim ended up being fine.

So — scary but could have been much worse. (All this happened before I found out about Richard’s sister. Perhaps that’s part of why I’m so rattled by her horrible accident.)

Kimi picked me up and we headed down southbayish for an errand, and ended up eating at the Ringer Hut on Saratoga Ave. so the day wasn’t all bad. Tomorrow morning we head in early to get the car. Too bad I’m working late tonight on a software rollout. Haven’t been getting much sleep lately at all.

Richard Bullwinkle’s blog about his sister’s scary motorcycle accident

Posted Wednesday, June 13th, 2007 at 7:25pm by Stephen

Richard Bullwinkle, known to some as “TiVolutionary” (because of his former role as TiVo’s first evangelist), recently started writing a blog about his sister Amacker after she suffered a terrible motorcycle accident. If you know Richard or Amacker, please visit Richard’s Amacker’s Page to learn about her progress and recovery. It’s a harrowing tale and ordeal. My thoughts are with Richard and Amacker and their family, and I hope she makes a full recovery.

My new favorite comic

Posted Tuesday, June 12th, 2007 at 10:28am by Stephen

The Laugh-Out-Loud Cats, recently unearthed kitty-hobos comics from the early 20th century, is sublimely brilliant.

Could this be the origin of the LOLCatz meme?

Hey, Google Street Maps is monitoring *our* cats too!

Posted Tuesday, June 12th, 2007 at 7:51am by Stephen

A lot of hullabaloo and outcry last week over the new Google Street Maps feature. Since we live in Googletown (otherwise known as Mountain View), our street’s right there. I’m not necessarily too happy that you can clearly read my car’s license plate in the driveway, but I’m not freaking out. Too much.

It didn’t take my brother Rob long to spot one of our cats, Stormy, wandering down the street a few houses away.

Kimi’s reaction:

Aah! Big brother is spying on my cats! I can imagine the log…

11:01 Cat is sleeping on porch.
12:33 Cat is still sleeping on porch.
12:47 Cat is now sleeping on driveway.
13:20 Cat is licking self.
14:07 Cat is sleeping again.

Big fun!

I can’t believe I just went to all the trouble of typing all that.

Goodbye, Tony Soprano. Hello John from Cincinnati.

I knew Tony Soprano. I worked with Tony Soprano. And believe me, John from Cincinnati, you’re no Tony Soprano.

* * *
As for the finale itself: The world seems outraged by the “ambiguous” ending to the Sopranos last night, but I thought it was perfect. In retrospect, Chase hardly could have written either ending that people expected.
