Yuri

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

Last Saturday, Kimi and I took a break from packing, got a babysitter and went to Yuri’s Night Bay Area over at Moffett Field, with Tracee and her friend Rafique. The event was an all-day affair, 2pm to 2am, with plenty of talks and interesting exhibits in addition to the music. It was quite Burning Man-esque, except without the playa dust, blinding desert heat, dust storm white outs, camping out for a week, driving several hundred miles, and the no commerce thing.

I would have liked to explore more, but based on our babysitting arrangements and when Tracee and Rafique could join us, we only made it there at around 9pm. The main attraction for Kimi was seeing Amon Tobin perform, which was around 10:15. The immediate problem was food: There were only a few booths, what they sold was a bit weird, and the lines were extremely long. Kimi and I waited in one long line, only to arrive at the front just as they ran out of food. So we bought some overpriced organic juice. Repeat again at the next line, where all we ended up with were some bizarre chips made from weird roots, and some chocolate. That was dinner. For an event of this size, they clearly didn’t plan the food situation well enough. More vendors, more choices, and adequate food supplies at each vendor would have helped a lot.

We spent a bit of time near a fire sculpture, talking with friends, and gradually made our way around to see different displays, some aeronautical, some environmental, and a few rides. We waited in line for the psycho-bike ride, which was a lot of fun: Four people pedal on bicycles, which spins around four seats in a merry-go-round. First you pedal and then you ride (or vice versa). I haven’t ridden a bicycle in a while, so it was a bit of a workout.

We had to relieve the babysitter at midnight, so we weren’t able to stay too late, but we did enjoy the performances, and I thought the light installations were very well done. The music was so loud, though. I guess the kids today can’t have it any other way, but I was very glad Kimi remembered ear plugs. I was a little put off to see one dad had dragged along his (approximately) seven year old daughter and plunked her down by the speakers. She didn’t have ear plugs, and clearly wasn’t enjoying herself. Same kind of parent who drags toddlers to horror movies, I guess.

Amon was outstanding, and did make the evening worthwhile. There was a bit of cognitive dissonance in wandering past hangars and flight trainers, across a parade ground and runway, only to arrive at a rave on an airstrip. I would love to attend this event next year, prepared with having eaten at home and being able to attend more of it.

Post Tacoma

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

So we got back from Tacoma in last night (and thanks go to John C. for dropping us off and picking us up from SJC). It was a good trip — a chance for us to spend time with our relatives there in Washington State, and for them to meet Sophie and us to meet my nephew-in-law Fallon, who was born in July.

(He’s the smiley one on the right.)

While we were there, we visited the Point Defiance Zoo (some pictures forthcoming if I get around to it), celebrated Kira’s fifth birthday, as well as her mom Tomi’s birthday, as well as my brother-in-law Rob’s birthday, plus Fallon’s baptism, as well as a trip to the Tacoma Children’s Museum, a big group family photo session, and a lavish fondue dinner at The Melting Pot.

John and I also caught Vantage Point, which I thought was a bit repetitive (the Rashomon-style retelling doesn’t hold up if you end up reshowing the same scene six times) but still a worthy distraction of a movie with some good performances and action scenes.

In answer to a dilemma I posted earlier, Sophie and Sammy were well-behaved on both airplane rides, but every one of us was sick (our hosts were just getting over bronchitis) and Sophie was having a very tough time at night (especially the first night there), so Kimi and I ended up more exhausted than we’d normally be after a trip like this. Poor Kimi’s very much under the weather right now.

Still, we had a great time and it was wonderful to get out of California for a bit. Thanks go to John, Tomi, Kira and Fallon for hosting us, plus thanks to Rob for taking time off work to hang out with us. Finally, big thanks to John’s parents, Foote and Louise, for some wonderful gifts and for watching Sammy and Sophie and Kira and Fallon on fondue night.

Eastridge

Sunday, March 2nd, 2008

Earlier today we headed out to Eastridge mall to meet up with Diana and Jose and their four kids (Joy, Timmy, Faith, Joshua) for lunch and hanging out at the mall. Jose was kind of enough to take some pictures. It was great to have lunch with them, catch up, and run around the shops.

Sammy Mack in his bedroom, reading a Richard Scarry book...to his ball, Mountain View, CA, February 2, 20088

While John and Yvonne were over for dinner (and to catch up on The Sarah Connor Chronicles with me), Sammy decided he was tired of grown-ups talking, and wanted to read a book. But what was a bit mystifying to me is that he wanted to read to his ball, telling us the ball wanted to know how bread was made.

Christmas parties…

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

We had a brief one with Nancy, Kyrie, Jack, Andy, George, Nick, and Tommy tonight to do a gift exchange before Kyrie and her boys head off for Boston.

This morning Kimi went to Sophie’s upcoming classroom’s Christmas party. (Sophie will be joining the “Butterfly” room at the Children’s Preschool Center in Palo Alto starting mid January.)

Yesterday, Kimi went to Sammy’s CPSC classroom’s Christmas party (he’s in the “Hummingbird” room).

Last week Kimi and I went to TiVo’s Christmas party.

I think that’s it for parties until Christmas itself.

Kimi dressed Sophie for the occasion and I have to say, as biased as I am, I think she looks adorable. She’s starting to smile a lot more, although not reliably enough that I’ve been able to catch it well in a picture.

You can’t really tell in the picture, but Sophie has some infant skin conditions. There’s her “cradle cap,” which is a euphemism for all kinds of crusty gunk on her scalp. There are her “angel kisses,” which is a euphemism for blotchy red skin on her face. There’s her “stork bite” which is a euphemism for a bunch of red bruising around her left eye (birth trauma, a side effect of her rapid delivery). All of it should fade in a few months. She’s definitely filling out, much like Sammy did at the same age — she’s really pudgy! Almost 12 pounds now.

At 12 pounds, an infant can start possibly sleeping through the night. Sophie’s not to that point yet regularly, but she is starting to sleep in 5 hour blocks now. She’s had 1 or 2 nights where she slept for 8 hours. Not consistent yet, though. Sleep glorious sleep, how I miss you.

We had our friend Howard over on Sunday for a quick visit; he brought his son Ethan and his twins Brian and Katie with him. Sammy had a great time. Howard, who works for Pixar, was impressed by Sammy’s Cars paraphernalia: Sammy was wearing his Cars shirt, Cars shoes, and had his Cars jacket nearby, and was playing with his Cars speedway. (“Speed? I am speed!” “You’re one gutsy racer!” Repeat ad infinitum.)

Good thing we didn’t show Howard the Cars towel, Cars socks, and all the other Cars toys. But anyway, Howard was telling me about the first year after his twins were born, and how crushing the exhaustion and sleep deprivation was for that entire first year. I have to say as hard as it is having a 2 year old and a 2 month old, at least we’re not dealing with twins. I am in awe just thinking of it.

Meeting Sophie; pictures by Erin

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

My brother Phil, my sister-in-law Erin, and my niece Sarah visited today for lunch and to meet Sophie; and later Erin sent me these pictures that she took.

Sleeping with the elephant

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

Much better night for Sammy last night; he went to bed gracefully (with a lot more coddling than normal), and slept straight through again. He’s in a great mood, and had a fun time at Hot Shots at school, learning how to play with hoops.

In contrast, Sophie needed feeding at 3am, 5am, 6am and 7am. So Kimi didn’t get much sleep.

Sophie’s sleeping calmly now, and Kimi’s napping (I napped earlier). Having Jen relieve us for naps is great. Jen’s on vacation Thursday and Friday, however, so the next four days it’s just the four of us.

Sophie and Talia

Monday, October 1st, 2007

Talia and Sophie at the Mack home, October 1, 2007, Mountain View, CA

Today, Monday, October 1, begins the second week of my paternity leave, and Sophie is now eight days old. She’s starting to fill out a bit. The bruising around her eye (from her quick entrance into the world) is starting to fade. She’s been a great sleeper. In the photo here, Natalia (Talia) is holding her. Talia is our nanny Jen’s daughter, and she and Sammy are great friends. Having a nanny has made things a lot easier on us than when Sammy was born; Jen is a lifesaver.

Sammy has been very resistant to napping and has been throwing fits at bedtime. We’re trying to spend as much time with him as we did before Sophie arrived, but I know it’s a very confusing transition for him to welcome someone new into the home.

Tonight we’re going to have Tom, Jennifer and Miranda (Kimi’s uncle’s family) over for dinner, and Kimi’s cooking now. She wasn’t able to cook much in the last few months of her pregnancy, and I think she really missed it. It smells delicious!

Yvonne and Sophie

Sunday, September 30th, 2007

We took Sophie and Sammy out this morning to the Valley Fair mall for a portrait session. It was our first expedition as a family of four. We had a ten a.m. appointment, and were a bit late; it’s much harder loading up and moving out with four people than three. Sammy lost patience early on in the photo shoot, but Kimi still managed to select some good shots which we had framed. I may scan them in later, although they’re a bit big for our scanner. We had big plans to get some outfits and shoes for Sammy but really it took us about six hours to just get the pictures done, if you count from dressing the kids in the morning to unloading them aftewards. Sammy didn’t really want to nap when we got home and put up a fuss. I have to say the trip kinda wore me out.

Fortunately we are having John and Yvonne over for dinner. Our neighbours Corey and Denetra (with their daughter Kaitlin) dropped off some delicious manicotti for us.

Light Rail to Discovery

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

This morning, Saturday, Sammy and I hopped on the light rail from the downtown Mountain View station and headed out to the Children’s Discovery Museum in San Jose. (I also took him there a week ago.) Kimi stayed home with Sophie. I’m honestly not sure which Sammy liked better, the train or the museum. But they have a Clifford exhibit at the museum which he likes a lot.
