For Dom...

A Prince of a man.

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

sonofabike, thanks for the concern and it's a good point. I'm sure the main reason my wife moved the items is because they were on the road, it was dark, and they were a hazard to the cars coming to the scene. It's one thing for you and I who were not there to second guess someone's actions, and another thing if you're a witness to the entire situation. (By the way, this was not a hit and run, and the driver and a witness were there. The police did NOT need the items in the original location to investigate.)

I've been checking out reviews on this booster/charger and saw this comment on Amazon.com:

"Lucky for me, someone wrote five days ago that with some cars you have to turn the ignition key to the "accessory" mode (i.e. car radio on) before you can charge through the cigarette lighter."

http://www.amazon.com/review/R2L1YA2IBBGZ10/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm/

The product would probably get better reviews if more people were aware of this fact. The charger can't work unless it has a connection to the battery. Black and Decker would be doing themselves a favor by mentioning it in the instructions.

<cite>"Then something clicked. I let go of the man’s hand for a few moments, and I picked up his bicycle from the opposite lane. The thick metal handlebars were crumpled, and I couldn’t wheel it. I had to pick it up. ... I dumped it on the side of the road. Then I saw his backpack. It was heavy, black, and quite far from where the bike and body were. ... I flung the backpack near the mangled bike."</cite>

Kim, thanks for your personal account of this very tragic incident. Encounters like yours can be traumatic incidents in themselves, at very least a brutal reminder of how vulnerable all of us are in the face of a collision with a car - cyclist or pedestrian. At the scene of such an incident, it must feel desperately difficult to feel helpful, but you clearly did your best.

The part that troubles me is the manner in which you liberally decided to move the victim's bicycle and bag. From your description, I can only assume that you did this before the police and emergency responders arrived. Why did you feel this was necessary and helpful?

Hit and run incidents are difficult enough to investigate to yield the apprehension of the suspect that flees the scene. Your action altered the scene of the incident before the police arrived may have significantly eliminated what little information police COULD have collected from the scene to help them in an investigation.

In addition to wearing a helmet, the choice of bicycle light is important. There are many lights which may qualify as a bike light under the law but aren't very useful in reality.

More light is better, and your life may depend on it. Good lights are expensive but keep in mind that you need to be visible by drivers of cars.

I just killed Buzz too, for the short term. I was getting a bit creeped out by my work associates automatically following me there. My blog/tweet life and my day job usually have a nice air gap between them. As it should be. Buzz 's Gmail integration and auto-follow (which is no more?) obliterates that.

Dave Z., I'll post my list of frustrations with Twitter on another day!

Today I pulled the plug on Buzz and will check back in 60 days. I find it too frustrating to use right now.

I'm not worried about FF going away, even after the FB purchase. And FB's latest redesign is my favorite iteration of FB yet, so it may be that I end up spending most of my time here on my own site and on FB.

I'm not writing off Buzz entirely. The fact they made improvements today, on the first week of release, speaks to how fast they can iterate. I look forward to revisiting this post in 60 days.

Better get used to Buzz since Facebook owns FriendFeed. And you know how often they redesign their site. ;) I'm sticking with Twitter... Just wish they'd integrate pictures and shortlinks directly. But, yeah, a real profile page (Twitter or Buzz) would be nice too.

Pretty crazy idea, but worth a try. I mean, you've got reality t.v. stars and then you have Twilight Red Thirst! Have you read Kim Newman's books? How are they?

From Italy: don't buy it, it didn't help to charge a small battery of a Lancia Y (1300 cc) and a Volvo V70 D5. It doesn't work! I didn't buy a "chinese" jump starter because I wanted to be sure to have a good help in case of need, so I bought a Black and Decker because I trusted this brand: big mistake. 50 euros thrown away...

Man the same thing happend to me with this charger?
Anyhow I stumbled on a sale at Wall Mart for a Stanley 300 amp charger for $19.00!.
You are suppose to let it charge for 24hrs first usage. But being the impatient man that I am I plugged it into my wall at home with extension chord and hooked it up. It charged in about 5 seconds flat. Needless to say I will be using this next time my son decides to leave the van light on after basketball practice :) Nice features included a usb port which will come in handy I'm sure. $19.00 was a steal found out that they cost from $40.00 and up usualy. I would recomend this rather then any other portable other then jumper cables which you can't go wrong there.

Wish I had USAA. They're the first to allow you to scan/photograph a check (via iPhone even!) rather than dropping it off somewhere. Hope the others get with it until we can universally move on from paper.

Stephen, fantastic post. I could not agree with you more and this was a refreshing statement and insight into a man I know more of now, through zeigen.com, than I ever had a clue about after 2 years of working together.

I'm right there with you.

Although I'm perhaps a bit less tolerant of other people's beliefs when they're belief systems that propagate, even slightly, bigotry or homophobia or racism or just plain ignorance of science on the whole. I find it irritating that we might have a vastly more advanced society, with greater harmony, fewer wars, evolutionary leaps in science and medical research and more, were it not for personal 'faith based' belief systems that ultimately block progress for the sake of a collective bodies own unfounded assumptions of 'right and wrong' born from a time of great ignorance.

But I digress. Wonderful post. Bravo.
