Comment on Windows key+L: Lock desktop by Mako

I think Windows+L is a wonderfully useful keyboard shortcut. (Clearly, I lock my workstation often.)

This shortcut is new in Windows XP; it wasn't available on Windows 2000. So back on 2000, one annoying alternative for Windows+L would be to press Ctrl+Alt+Del, then press Enter (because Lock is usually the default button selected) or K (the mnemonic).

I think this keyboard shortcut is really terrible. The date format is not customizable, so it becomes a nuisance every time I accidentally hit this key.

Ctrl+Z also works in almost every text field, too, regardless of whether the whole application has an undo.

As a bonus, Ctrl+Y (redo) also works in text fields, although it is not documented.

I'd like to note that if you send a big file to the Recycle Bin, then it might evict existing entries in it. This can be troubling if you like to check your Recycle Bin before permanently deleting its files.

So with the Shift+Delete method, you don't run the risk of this happening.

Hi Charlie,

Alt+Shift+F10 only works for the smart tags -- double underline in Word, lightning bolt in Excel.

What you're using is the "shortcut menu" or "context menu," which we covered previously:

Thanks as always for the tips. I'm a huge fan of them, and this site.

I find, though, that the alt-shift-f10 doesn't work for me, but shift-f10 does. Anyone else? This was tested on Word 2007.

BTW, the same tip works when using Firefox and you get a spelling error indicated while filling in a text area. It would also work on the desktop, when you want to right-click to change screen resolution, or on a browser page when you want to access the menu that lets you see the HTML source for a web page, etc.

Finally, there's yet another key--a single keystroke--to effect all the above. For those with a "windows keyboard" (where you have the "windows" key down next to the left Alt key, typically), you may notice another curious key, which has a picture of a menu with an arrow on it. On mine it's next to the PrntScrn key. Called by some the "context key", it's used for the same thing as discussed in this tip: to pull up the context menu for wherever the cursor is currently located.

Hope that's helpful. Keep up the good work!

Sorry guys -- missed Chris's question when it first came up in January. I certainly do care.

Chris, you're right, and I'm wrong. It looks like Ctrl+U doesn't work in any version of IE past version 4, so I've edited the article accordingly.

The only keyboard method in recent version of IE is to press Alt+V to open the View menu, then C to select the Source command.

Either Windows+Pause or Windows+Break should work. The official listing from Microsoft's help pages is Windows+Break, but keyboards do vary.

Alex, sorry, no idea about what might have disabled it. Glad the reboot fixed it though. (Josh, try rebooting?)

Ah, hmm. Well, whatever special web site was letting you use Ctrl+B for bold, that was something they set up. There's probably a setting in Firefox to disable that keyboard shortcut, but I'm sorry to say I don't know how to do it.

You might see if Ctrl+Alt+B works on that web page for Bold, since that keystroke does nothing in Firefox.

Denise, which program are you using when you try F7 and it doesn't work? Not every program has spell check, unfortunately. Try it in Word.

cporche, I think this is going to depend on your keyboard. Perhaps you've hit the Fn lock key on your laptop?

Very nice tip. Thanks for sharing. In case other Vista uses see this and want to do it, it's not in the same place. Fortunately, someone blogged about hot to find it:

Postscript. Banging on the various flavors and colors of "Normal" style finally restored this functionality. I suspect there is a Word bug in here somewhere, but I would not know how to repro it. :-(

I've been using the Shift F3 shortcut for years and find it extremely useful, especially because some people still use all caps, as if they were still programming on a 1980's-era DOS machine, and when you copy that text, Shift F3 allows you to convert it quickly into something less primitive. :-)

However, this feature quit working for me in Word 2007. As one of the previous posters indicated, the F-Lock key will disable the feature. I know that from past experience and it was one of the first things I investigated, but that is not what is causing the problem in my case. I suspect that I disabled it accidentally by changing the configuration of the AutoCorrect settings, or by some similar goof up, but so far I have not been able to figure out what I did to turn it off.

Thanx, Estephen - but that is not what i meant. I have a window in Firefox that used to use CtrlB for BOLD. Now that i switched from IE (where CtrlB did BOLD), I lost that shortcut. In short: I want do disable CtrlB to open Bookmarks (Ctrl+I as well), in order to use them for Bold and Italic in a specific firefox window.
Thanks anyway!

Sorry, that isn't a Windows shortcut; it's a Dell (and Gateway and others) shortcut. On other brands it does nothing. Fujitsu laptops have an actual sliding switch for the WLAN on most models.

Sure, extensions are great (I use FlashGot from http://flashgot.net/ personally) but not everyone likes them.

The time may come when this keystroke shortcut is useful for you.

Heck, even if you're saving just one thing and don't want to right-click, try Alt+Enter.

Here's an even better way: there's a Firefox extension called DownThemAll:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/201

Right-click anywhere on the screen (or for the keyboard-savvy you can use the context menu key) and download every linked file of any type to wherever location you specify. You can batch-rename files as you go and filter file types, file names, etc. with pre-defined categories and/or wild card characters.

Sorry dude, but I'm not going to repeat the same keystroke combination of Tab, Alt+Enter, Alt+F4, Tab, Alt+Enter, Alt+F4...especially when that combination presupposes a simply formatted HTML page with sequential links that you want to download.

Make sure you have the hidden rows/columns selected when you do this keyboard shortcut. Since they're hidden, that's a bit tricky. The best thing to do is go to a cell before the hidden part, then press Shift while you use the right arrow or down arrow key to go after the hidden part, then press Shift+Ctrl+0.

Norma, sorry that I can't help you unless you tell me which key you're confused by.

Hans, on many computers, you can configure the power button (on the laptop or desktop) to be a stand by button. Failing that, try Ctrl+Alt+Del, then press S to Shut Down, use the up and down arrows until you find Hibernate, then press Enter.

That would have been clever if I had done it as an April Fools. :) But no, I'm not that clever.

I appreciate the suggestions -- I actually have a few dozen ideas, just not the time to write them up. The application coverage is right on -- when I get back on track, I have several weeks for Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access and a few others.

Ctrl + Shift + 0 does not unhide the column in Excel 2007 (vista system). Is there any bug fix for this since I'm sure this shortcut has not been removed as it is still mentioned in the Shortcut keys list and in the tip of the day given on top of this page also.
Sounds like you ran out of topics. :-)

I appreciate your blog. They are useful.

As for more topics: You could expand the application coverage, like talk about VMWare/VirtualPC, etc.You could do a "best of" series, or a cheat sheet linking post. You could also talk about how to define your own keyboard shortcuts using various built-in and add-on programs. Or you can start advocating keyboard over mouse like Coding Horror.

Oh wait, is this April Fools? It is in my time zone. :-]

Thanx a ton man!!

I recently bought a dell laptop (XPS m1730) and sadly enough it has no Menu Key and I've been looking every where for a way to make a shortcut for it, not knowing it was already there. Actually I love KB short cuts and I hardly ever use the mouse.

Thanx again man! :)

Shouldn't it read '...you’ll see it switch between ... and "Six Million Dollar Man”.' because there is no punctuation in it? (The Original only has the first "S" a capital).

I already knew this shortcut, as well as some of the other ones listed on here. But in general, you're maintaining a really nice archive of very useful shortcuts (one I do and don't know). Keep at it! P.S. how's the little one?

My wife uses MS Works and had a story typed in all caps. When I copied it to Word and went through the Toggle F-3 sequence to arrive at "capitalize initial letter of sentence" it capitalized only the initial letter of the sentence(s) inside the paragraph, not the opening sentence of the paragraph.. By trying out some text from other sources, it was no problem. Is there some idiosyncrasy of Works that causes this to happen?

Ok, yes...for Windows XP, the correct answer is backspace. Notice how when you hit backspace (from windows explorer) the forward button doesn't light up....because it when to the parent dir, not backwards. :) Hope this helps.

Ed, you are the man! Backspace works in XP as "up one level". In Vista, it works as "back one page". Your suggested remedy (Alt + up) works as "up one level" in Vista. I did know this key combo and thank you for pointing it out.

FWIW, it appears that this affects only the title bars, menus, and some text within the screens. For instance, I noticed it didn't increase the size/readability of text within FF, but it did in crease the size of folder names in Outlook and similarly various text within some other apps. (I suppose you've already written about the ctrl-+/- shortcut for increasing/decreasing text size within FF.)

Thanks as always for the tips.

About this use of / in FF, this is interesting. I notice that this is different from Ctrl-F in a couple of ways. First, it doesn't let you do a next/prev (as the other find does). Instead, once it finds, it stops. If you hit enter, it doesn't repeat the find (as in Ctrl-F). Also, hitting / again doesn't repeat the find, and unlike Ctrl-F, it doesn't show in the find field the value last used, so you have to type it again. Finally, curiously, even if you do type the text again, it doesn't find the "next" value. It finds the same value just found (if any). It's as if it doesn't advance the cursor beyond the found text.

None of these are annoyances, just differences that may have advantages if you understand them. For instance, since it "just stops" and can't be repeated, then if what is found is text in a hyperlink, the find with / actually selects the hyperlink, so you can just hit enter to execute the link. Using Ctrl-F, you'd have to hit escape first (to remove the option for doing next/prev).

Naturally, another difference is that the / naturally won't work while typing in a text field, so you have to use Ctrl-F in that case.

Linda, that's the same as what I call "Initial Letter Case" -- you can do that with Shift+F3 but only if there is no punctuation at the end of what you have selected.

Hi,
I am afraid these two are maybe not applicable for Outlook 2003. When I press Ctrl+R it add an invisible character which is this one "°" in Word after displaying the hidden characters. And Ctrl+J shortcut opens the Journal Entry window instead of justifying the text. I am sure there must be different shortcut keys for these kind of formatting but I haven't found them yet. Anyone knows something more?
Thanks!

Hello, thanks a lot for a good advice!

However I have tried the Ctrl+ and seems to me it doesn't work. At least not in the Outlook 2003. If anybody knows why please just leave me a note here..

Anyway the first option is perfect :)

Thanx.

I am generally a big fan of shortcuts, but because I have wandering fingers I have on more than one occasion sent emails on accident and I can't have that happen at work anymore. Does anyone have an answer for the above question - can you disable the "send" shortcuts?

Hi Sarah, so shift+arrow key no longer selects at all, in any application -- even a simple one like notepad?

As far as I'm aware, there's no way to turn it on and off without some other application being installed.

Slide number then enter

We recently had several presenters use the 'slide number then enter' keyboard short cut. For some presentations it worked perfectly, for others it never worked. Some presentations seemed fixated on one slide and no matter what number we selected, followed by enter, it would always return to that 'favourite' slide. For others the selection seemed to be random.

This drove us mad. What were we doing wrong, and what could we have done to fix it on the spot? Or was the fault in the file? And what could we have done about that? Was it something to do with the version of PowerPoint used?

I'd certainly appreciate a reply.

Yep, one more thing... if this value exists, it may be reason why Win+L does not work... try deleting it then...

Hm, might interest you that the value's name is
DisableLockWorkstation
So it will look like this

DisableLockWorkstation REG_DWORD 0x0000000x(x)

where x is either 1 or 0.

Hi,

There is a way how to enable/disable shortcuts functionality via windows registry. You need to go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
If this key does not exist, create it.(There will be already key explorer in key Policies, so create key System)
Then you need to add a value type DWORD, with value
0 - enable Win+L shortcut
1 - disable Win+L shortcut

Should work for both XP and Vista.

However, it may not work on some PCs... not sure why, though...

Bashi, sorry to hear Windows+L isn't working for you. I've never heard of this issue before, and there isn't normally a way to disable these keystrokes, so I don't know why it's not working.

Short of contacting Microsoft for help, my only suggestion is to use Ctrl+Alt+Delete, Enter in the meantime.

The "Ctrl+alt+del" does work on my machine. The computer is also locked properly on "Ctrl+Alt+Del" combination.

I wanted a shortcut for this. As it is said here the " Windows(key) +l" combination. this doesnot work on my machine.

Is there anything on the comp wherein we can enable or disable these shortcuts? If there is any please do let me know.

Thanks a lot for all your help.

Ok, try this:
1. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete
2. Select the "Lock Computer" button (by pressing either Enter, since it's default, or K, since that letter is underlined)

Do you see the appropriate "Computer Locked" dialog when you do that?

So you want to be able to press a key and have it paste in your e-mail address?

There's no built-in way to do that.

You have two choices:
1. Get a programmable keyboard (such as <a href="http://www.amazon.com/120-KEY-Inet-Multimedia-Keyboard-Programmable/dp/B0009B0DSY/ref=pd_bbs_1/105-3801546-8631603?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1189116419&sr=8-1" rel="nofollow">this one</a>), or
2. Get a macro program (such as <a href="http://www.download.com/AutoHotkey/3000-2094_4-10714230.html?tag=lst-0-4" rel="nofollow">this one</a>)

I don't endorse either of those examples, by the way -- and I haven't tried either one. I'm just including them as examples of what I have in mind.

I'm sorry to say, Costin, that I know of no way to emulate this using an external keyboard.

What type of laptop do you have? There is quite possibly an application supplied by your vendor which can easily disable wireless. For example, on my Dell laptop, there's a system tray icon for their wireless manager; I can right click on it (with a mouse, horrors!) to get a shortcut menu for wireless options that includes disabling wireless.

Another choice is to use the Network control panel:
Ctrl+Esc to open the Start Menu
S for Settings
N for Network Connections
Up Arrow to highlight the Wireless connection
Shift+F10 for the shortcut menu
B for Disable

JoeyD, I'd suggest you look into Word's "AutoCorrect" feature (under the Tools menu), then disable the feature that capitalizes at the beginning of the sentence.

Finally got it to work... thanks for all the suggestion. My keyboard is newish and has a "Fn" lock key. I realized it needed to be active before the shortcut worked.

Cheers to all!

Nice shortcut - works fine for me in Word 03 :) Another handy shortcut is "Ctrl+Shift+K" which makes the text small caps - great for titles/headings.

The auto capitalization plagues me!
My company's name is spelled in all lowercase letters.
Any idea on how to change the one word so that it never auto capitalizes at the beginning of a sentence?

Yet another easy way to repeat find in Firefox is to use the "F3" key. This key also works the same way in most other Windows programs.

Palmer,

That's not my experience. Try this and see if you get the same behavior:

1. Start Windows Explorer with Windows key + E.
2. Hit F6 to move to the address bar.
3. Type in a directory such as C:\WINDOWS and press Enter.
4. Type in a different directory such as C:\Documents and Settings and press Enter.
5. Press Backspace

By your description, you should be back in the C:\WINDOWS directory. But instead you end up in the C:\ directory, as I described.

My one disclaimer is that I'm using Windows XP; Vista may have changed the behavior.

This is incorrect. Backspace is the shortcut key for the "Back" command. Typically this will move you up a level if you're drilling down through folders, but if you jump directly from one folder to another (perhaps by using the Desktop or My Documents shortcut in the File dialog, or just directly typing in a path to jump to), then Backspace will return you to the last folder, not the one above it in the tree. Backspace is also the shortcut key for Back in all internet browsers I am aware of.
